How to Style White Sneakers

Does anyone else feel that sneakers have become the must-have casual shoe? At this rate, it seems like sneakers will be trending forever. You won’t hear any complaints from me about that. I love a shoe that’s as comfortable as it is fashionable, which makes sneakers kind of perfect. Knowing how to style white sneakers is the key to looking as chic as you are comfortable, so I’m going to answer some common questions that I hear about wearing white sneakers fashionably!

Are White Sneakers in Style?

When Parisian women are wearing sneakers to run around the city, you know you're in good company! Sneakers no longer carry the casual stigma they did in the past. Now, a simple pair of white sneakers can look stylish, whatever your look. If you don’t currently have a pair of sneakers in your closet, I recommend changing that! This wardrobe staple is flattering, versatile, seasonless, and very chic. Sneakers aren’t just limited to the gym or running errands anymore.

Sneakers or Tennis Shoes - Is There a Difference?

Speaking of the gym, people often wonder if there is a difference between tennis shoes and sneakers. In literal terms, tennis shoes are designed for exactly that: Tennis (or court) wear. Sneakers, on the other hand, encompass a wider variety of styles, colors, and designs. Even though there is a literal difference between tennis shoes and sneakers, the terms are often used interchangeably.

That being said, you will still see “tennis shoes” being worn as streetwear. It’s just a matter of preference in regards to style, color, and comfort level.

Do White Sneakers Go with Everything?

Their neutral color and style make sneakers one of the more versatile shoe options, but do they work with every type of outfit? I say no. This is especially true when it comes to dresses. Some looks just deserve an extra special shoe to set them off. During the day, when you’re running around for work or doing errands - or when you’re traveling and sightseeing - I’m all about being comfortable. Aren’t you? This is what makes white sneakers such a wardrobe staple!

What to Wear with White Sneakers

The key to styling white sneakers is to select casual and chic elements that will perfectly balance out the overall look. This starts with the right sneaker. I will always opt for white, ivory, or pale gray. Nothing chunky or multi-colored. I also lean towards a thinner sole - no platform - as it allows them to be more versatile and not scream “tennis shoes.” Plus, this way the tennis shoes go with just about any outfit.

Here are some of my favorite things to wear with white sneakers, beyond blue jeans.

Dresses and Skirts

Do you have a brunch or lunch with the ladies on your calendar? I love the look of pairing sporty sneakers with a feminine midi skirt and knit top or dress. Then you’re ready for whatever adventure comes your way that afternoon, even if it’s just running errands.

Tailored Suits

Another fresh take is to pair them with suiting and crisp tailoring, one of this season’s most popular trends. White sneakers have a natural ability to dress things down a bit, which works perfectly for a trouser suit. With a heeled boot or loafer, the outfit would feel more business casual, but with a white sneaker, it’s a perfectly-elevated look for a day out.

Trousers

Loose-fitting trousers are everywhere this season, and what a comfortable, chic alternative to denim! With a pair of trousers, a sweater, and your sneakers, you’ll be able to run to the grocery store and then straight to lunch with friends. To make it a little more sophisticated, opt for a sweater and trousers in the same color tones to make it a monochrome look.

Sweatsuit

One of the best things to come out of the past year is the universal acceptance of loungewear as clothes, and a matching sweatsuit is something you should have in your wardrobe not only as something to turn to when you want to feel cozy but also as something you can style up for a daytime look. The footwear of choice? You guessed it.

White Sneakers Outfit Ideas

How to Wear White Sneakers with Jeans

This pairing demonstrates the business casual assignment. Business-like on top and casual on the bottom. A pair of white sneakers worn with a blazer creates a laid-back but chic presentation. Plus adding the cashmere t-shirt, cross-body bag and jewelry are details that elevate the look for many different occasions. Click here for information and links for the pieces above.

How to Style White Sneakers with a Dress

Put a sporty twist on a more feminine look with a great denim jacket and sneakers. The accessories once again are the details that can elevate the look or keep it simple. To find any of these pieces, click here.

How to Dress Up Sneakers

I love suits, and this eye-catching green one is no exception. Both pieces can be deconstructed and paired with blue or white denim, a skirt or a dress, really anything that you want to add a pop of color to. In this color story I love the black and white polka dot purse , as it creates some weight to the whole outfit. This suit is from Zara and you can find it as well as the other pieces in the mood board, right here.

The Best White Sneakers for Women

I was recently at a major department store and was stunned when I walked into the shoe department: There was an enormous amount of square footage dedicated to sneakers! I tried on many pairs - different styles and colors. I narrowed my choices to four and then finally to one.

When I select a sneaker, I like them to be pretty simple (low cut, thin sole, minimal color) so that they’re versatile. But I’m tempted to add something a little more lively this summer. Some of my favorite brands are Veja , Superga and Madewell. I also love Frye’s version.  They are leather inside as well, so you don’t have to wear socks if you don’t want to. I have a pair and love them. I recently purchased a pair of sneakers from Ecco as well. I tried on multiple pairs and they were, hands down, the most comfortable. But the Paul Green pair were a close second.

So if you don't have a pair of white sneakers in your closet yet, you need a pair! Besides the few brands I mentioned above, there are are many more to choose from. You’ll find all my picks here.

I hope that these tips have given you some inspiration for sporty-yet-chic looks to wear this season! If you’d like some personalized style tips, I’d love to help you create a look you love! Head over here to learn more about my services.
