The Ease of a Jumpsuit
I’ve always loved the ease of a jumpsuit. Like a dress, it’s one and done . And it’s such a statement piece. Just add the appropriate shoes and accessories and you have a complete outfit . Some of the questions I get most often about jumpsuits from clients is how to accessorize, what shoes are appropriate, and of course, what style works best for their body type.
So here are 5 tips for making a jumpsuit work for you:
EMPHASIZE YOUR WAIST. You could do that a couple of different ways. First is with a belt, which will add a little femininity and will give you a curvier look. Or, you could find a style like the one pictured above that is a knit and naturally follows your curves. This jumpsuit is from Norma Kamali (so is the one above) and has a shirred waist which is very flattering and forgiving - no belt required.
2. PAIR WITH A BLAZER OR CARDIGAN. One of my favorite things about a jumpsuit is how versatile it can be. A little like a great black dress. For a weekend look you can add a denim jacket or a long, flown cardigan , and just as easily dress it up with a blazer or novelty coat in a beautiful silk or linen fabric for a night out on the town (that time is coming very soon!) Shoes and jewelry are the finishing touch for both day and evening. That’s why a jumpsuit is such a great travel piece - I’ll say it again, it’s versatile!
3. THE RIGHT SHOE. Both of the jumpsuits I have pictured have a wider leg so they pair best with a shoe with some elevation. It doesn’t have to be a lot. A platform sandal, a wedge, or even a tennis shoe with a thicker sole. For evening, sandals with a wedge ,a platform or a some kind of heel - kitten, block or anything in between, whatever you feel amazing in. Here are some suggestions…
4. BUY A SOLID COLOR. I prefer a solid color in a jumpsuit. It doesn't have to be black, it could be burgundy, charcoal, navy or even a bright color if that works for you. This is also what creates the versatility. And a solid color is going to elongate your body since it’s one unbroken vertical line. And that’s always good. You can always add some pattern in your jacket or shoes.
5. FIND THE PERFECT FIT. Finding a jumpsuit that fits is the key to looking polished and put together. You don’t want it to be too tight (ala Catwoman), or too loose, so that you’re swallowed up and appear shorter and wider than you are. One of the reasons I love the two jumpsuits here from Norma Kamali, is that they are a lovely, denser knit fabric that is very forgiving and more body-skimming and comfortable.
